EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma/GED.
- If licensed as a Technician in Training, must complete an Indiana State Board of Pharmacy approve pharmacy technician course within 1 year of beginning employment.
- Must possess the ability to read, write, compute, comprehend and implement written and verbal instructions.
- Must meet hospital annual education requirements and regularly attend department meetings to remain informed on current issues.
- Must be in good physical and mental health and possess a professional demeanor.
- Must possess the ability to learn, change and adapt as the fields of pharmacy and health care evolve and change.
- Must possess the ability to follow the supervision of the pharmacist in charge and interact with other departments in a constructive and pleasant manner.
- Must possess the ability to deal with the public in a professional and tactful manner.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Check refrigerator temperature and document that check on log daily.
- Refill pyxis units daily and as needed per stock out reports.
- Check in new drug and IV inventory.
- Restock IV fluids, tubings and irrigation fluids in pharmacy.
- Check cost and NDC of items received.
- Correctly document pharmacy usage and destruction.
- Fill other departments’ requisitions.
- Correctly package and prepare unit dose labels and packaging.
- Monthly pharmacy department check for expired medications.
- Monthly patient care areas medication inspections.
- Weekly cleaning of IV and chemotherapy rooms and general cleaning.
- Order needed supplies or medications from wholesaler or manufacturer.
- Compounding IV fluids and chemotherapy as required.
- Computing dosages.
- Assists with management of drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock (with proper rotation of items), arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting the need for ordering items, and maintaining proper documentation and record keeping.
- Assists pharmacists in insuring that pharmacy inventory is maintained at appropriate levels in a cost-conscious manner to promote availability of items included in the Formulary.
- Assists pharmacists in managing incoming telephone calls to ensure proper triage of calls
- Delivers medications to patient care areas within appropriate time frames.
- Packages dry orals, liquid orals and small volume injectables in unit-of-use containers using a combination of mechanical equipment and manual procedures.
