  • Assess assigned patients for overall conditions and needs, coordinates and gives care appropriately including treatments, all medications, initiates and maintains IV therapy, blood/blood product administration, etc.  Initiates and modifies care plans and goals, initiates discharge planning and teaching.  Prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet the goals and the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs of the patient.
  • Assist physicians as needed, transcribe and implement physician’s orders appropriately and accurately.  Report to the physician or appropriate person any pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients and record these accurately in the medical record.
  • Coordinate patient care with other team members and assigns duties in accordance with patient’s needs and the personnel’s capabilities and qualifications.  Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing care provided to patient by other nursing team members such as PCT or LPN.
  • Performs assessments for overall conditions and needs, interprets data, and delivers all nursing care with an age-appropriate focus.
  • Facilitates an efficient and accurate admission and disposition process; assists with initial interview collection (includes items such as patient history, VS, height, weight, allergies, screening information), transfer of patients both within the hospital and to other facilities, and discharges.
  • Performs assessments, interprets data, and delivers all nursing care with an age-appropriate focus.
  • Communicates professionally, consistently, and effectively with all team members to ensure coordination and prioritization of patient care duties and responsibilities.
  • Willingness to learn and work in a self-directed, flexible, agile team approach.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia recognition and treats appropriately per ACLS guidelines and hospital policy and procedure.  May be assigned/responsible for CCU/PCU level patients and remote telemetry units on the unit if competent.  Documents cardiac rhythms strips according to policy.
  • Demonstrates ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patients if proven competency and correctly interpret the results. Interprets lab and Diagnostic Imaging results; reports findings to the physician.

  • Utilizes computer documentation system appropriately.
  • Able to institute emergency measures and function appropriately in an emergent situation.
  • Recovers post-operative patients when necessary as directed by the supervisor as the workload of unit and staffing permits.
  • Provides care for patients on ventilators (with proven competency) and those with tracheostomies, accurately performs suctioning as needed. Uses EBSCO Host as a resource for nursing procedures.
  • Co-signs any documentation as needed (such as for LPN or Capstone Nursing Student)
  • Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department. Demonstrates a high degree of skill and accuracy in all nursing activities.
  • Assists physicians with special tests or procedures performed on the nursing unit, including insertion of central lines, arterial lines, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and chest tubes. If unable to provide assistance, arranges for an appropriately trained nurse to assist. Able to provide post-recovery monitoring of such patients.
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies. Ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.  Performs routine checks of supply carts and equipment.
  • Participates in orientation of new nursing department personnel.
  • Assists team members in giving care to patients or administers direct care when professional nursing skills and /or judgment are needed. Retains accountability for nursing care when delegating nursing regimens.
  • Coordinates nursing care of patients when scheduled for therapy or procedures by other departments or outside of the nursing department.
  • Understands lab, x-ray, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and surgical procedures as well as how to schedule these and interpret results for notification of appropriate persons. Contacts appropriate persons for clarification if needed.
  • Ascertains that adequate medications and supplies for the following shift are available on the unit.
  • Witness signatures on consents for treatments after physician or service provider has educated the patient/family regarding risks and benefits.
  • Understands use of all unit specific equipment and assures proper function.
  • Willing to assist with updating of policies and procedures as they apply to patient care.
  • Willing to participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Willing to work in alternate nursing areas when needed and skills allow.
  • Participates actively on committees or projects for improvement of nursing care when requested.
  • Attends at least 6 nursing staff meetings per year to keep current on issues and changes within the nursing department. Attends other meetings, in-services, and seminars to maintain skills and education standards.
  • Attends or participates in all mandatory departmental and hospital events, meetings, education and requirements.
  • Assures continuity of care by careful attention to report from previous shift and by giving a detailed and accurate report to oncoming shift.
  • Serves as the patient’s advocate.
  • Abides by infection control standards of Woodlawn Hospital.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.


  • Currently licensed in the state of Indiana as an RN. Maintains this licensure and provides Human Resources with any licensure renewals or changes.  Must hold self and others accountable for delivery of quality patient care.
  • Must possess Basic Life Support certification or obtain prior to providing direct patient care. Maintains BLS certification per hospital policy.
  • Must possess and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or be willing to obtain within 1 year.
  • Possess and demonstrate good communication and customer service skills and pleasant phone technique.
  • Possess a desire and capability for educating nursing staff, patients, and families.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a multi-task environment where interruptions may be frequent. Must be able to assess and command emergency situations and readily adapt to change.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as defined by hospital policy.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to adapt to variations in scheduling (including but not limited to overtime, work schedule changes or low census).
  • Good visual and aural acuity.
  • Maintains well-groomed appearance and practices good personal hygiene. Hospital ID badge should be worn at all times.
  • Ability to cooperate with other members of the medical team and personnel of other departments to give individualized patient care.
  • Willingness to consult with physician, pharmacist, or other medical professional if questions arise.
  • Basic computer and keyboard skills and demonstrate the ability to learn new skills in this area.
  • Recent experience in caring for the critically ill and basic recovery room education is desirable. A candidate without this experience may be selected and would complete a thorough and individualized orientation.  A candidate without these credentials may be selected and will accomplish such training during the orientation period.
