EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently licensed in the state of Indiana as an RN.
- Has completed the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Immunotherapy: Fundamentals of Administration program within 6 months of hire or is an Oncology Certified Nurse.
- Has completed the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course program within 18 months of hire or is an Oncology Certified Nurse. The oncology nurse is encouraged to work towards Oncology Nurse Certification.
- Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred, or obtain BLS prior to providing direct patient care.
- Emphatically assess the patient’s needs related to the disease process, treatment, and psychosocial needs.
- Telephone communication skills are essential to access resources and information regarding the patient. Therefore, pleasant telephone technique is required.
- Ability to serve the patient with a holistic approach.
- Skills of tact and diplomacy are essential in dealing with patients and families who are experiencing a life changing diagnosis.
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a multi-task environment where interruptions may be frequent. Able to assess and command emergency situations and readily adapt to change.
- Willingness to consult with Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), pharmacist, or other medical professional if questions or concerns arise.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Maintain and administer treatment plan as ordered by LIP. This shall necessitate:
- Adequate understanding of action and side effects of all chemotherapeutic and related drugs the patient is receiving.
- Adequate understanding of laboratory and diagnostic procedures and possess knowledge of how to interpret results for notification of appropriate persons when applicable.
- Close management, monitoring of, and active intervention in the side effect management of treatment.
- Close communication with the LIP regarding changes or concerns in the patient’s condition.
- Thorough teaching regarding the disease process, control of symptoms, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and side effects will be provided for the patient and their family. The patient and family will also receive psychosocial support as needed.
- Adequate technical skills to administer therapy with appropriate knowledge of handling and disposal of antineoplastic waste.
- Secure accurate and complete signed orders from the LIP for treatments and collaborate with the LIP on appropriate orders concerning care.
Other Primary Duties:
- Possess intravenous start skills and ability to access, use and troubleshoot implanted ports, tunneled and non- tunneled central venous catheters.
- Chiefly, enhance and coordinate patients’ care, their needs and well-being by communicating and working with: other departments and services within the hospital; outside medical facilities; the medical oncologist; the primary Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP); medical specialists; community resources; the patient and the patients’ family; and oncology staff nurses.
- Coordinate activities for clinic days with the oncologist and other departments that may be affected such as Lab and Registration. Organize medical and nursing data on the chart, organize physical set up, maintain appointments, and assist with the assessment of the patient in collaboration with the LIP. Subsequently, follow up on orders.
- Coordinate and arrange for the delivery of services to outpatients who require short-term treatment in the outpatient hospital setting. Generally this will include obtaining signed and appropriate physician orders, delivery of treatment, coordination with other departments involved in the care of the patient, and communicating with the patient, the primary LIP, and any specialist who may be involved.
- Abide by universal precautions and don personal protective equipment (PPE) when applicable in the course of patient care.
- Attends at least 6 nursing staff meetings per year to keep current on issues and changes within the nursing department. Attends other meetings, in-services, and seminars to maintain skills and education standards.
- Especially, serves as the patient’s advocate.
