As the director of the OB unit at your local rural community hospital, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some of life’s most beautiful moments—newborns taking their first breath, families coming together in joy, and mothers beginning the incredible journey of feeding their babies.
With around 170 deliveries a year, we may be a small unit, but our commitment to supporting our families is anything but small. One of the most important parts of newborn care we talk about with our moms and families is breastfeeding—a powerful, natural way to nourish your baby that also brings lifelong benefits for both mother and child.
Why Breastfeeding Matters
Breastfeeding is more than just a way to feed a baby—it’s a foundation for good health and strong bonds. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced.
Here’s why:
- Perfect Nutrition: Breast milk contains the ideal mix of vitamins, protein, and fat, everything your baby needs to grow strong and healthy. It’s tailored by your body, and it changes to meet your baby’s needs.
- Immunity Boost: Breast milk is full of antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfed babies have lower risks of ear infections, respiratory illnesses, diarrhea, and even chronic conditions like asthma and obesity.
- Bonding Time: Nursing helps strengthen the emotional bond between mother and baby. It promotes skin-to-skin contact, eye contact, and calming hormones that support emotional well-being—for both of you.
- Health Benefits for Moms: Breastfeeding helps your uterus contract after birth and reduces bleeding. Over time, it lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
- Convenience and Cost Savings: Breast milk is always at the right temperature, always ready, and free. It saves money on formula, bottles, and medical costs in the long run.
Support for Our Families
We know that breastfeeding can feel overwhelming at first, especially for new moms. That’s why our OB team is committed to walking alongside you. From the moment your baby is born, we help with skin-to-skin contact and offer hands-on guidance for those early latch attempts.
All our inspiring OB nurses are educated and trained in lactation to offer encouragement, answer your questions, and help troubleshoot any challenges you may face. In addition, we’re proud to have two board-certified lactation nurses and one certified lactation nurse on our team, ready to provide expert support when needed. Whether you’re a first-time mom or adding to your growing family, you are never alone on this journey.
Woodlawn also hosts a welcoming monthly Mom Support Group at the LifePlex in Plymouth, where one of our lactation nurses is available for personalized, one-on-one breastfeeding support. It’s a wonderful space to connect, share, and receive guidance in a relaxed, supportive environment.
And if breastfeeding doesn’t work out the way you hoped, we’ll support you in whatever feeding journey is right for you and your baby.
A Community That Cares
In a small town like ours, community means everything. Supporting moms and babies in their feeding journey is one way we help our community thrive—healthy babies, confident parents, and a future built on love and connection.
If you have questions about breastfeeding or would like support, please reach out to our OB unit. We’re here for you—every step of the way.
From our family to yours — congratulations and thank you for letting us be part of your story.
